Some of these changes had a profound effect on the pronunciation of the language. A number of these significant instances of language evolution are generally grouped together and termed the 'Great Vowel Shift'. These changes are generally considered to be unrelated to other, similar long-vowel changes taking place a little earlier. This book assesses an extensive range of irregular Middle English spellings for all these changes, with a view to identifying the real course of events: the dates, the chronology, and the dialects that stand out as being innovative. Using empirical evidence to offer a fresh perspective and drawing new, convincing conclusions, Stenbrenden offers an interpretation of the history of the English language which may change our view of sound change completely. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 450-1500|2fast 650 0 English language|yMiddle English, 1100-1500|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85043414|xVowels.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006459 650 0 English language|yMiddle English, 1100-1500|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85043414|xOrthography and spelling.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005058 650 0 English language|yOld English, ca. 450-1100|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85005084|xVowels.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006459 650 0 English language|yOld English, ca. 450-1100|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85005084|xOrthography and spelling.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005058 650 0 English language|xPronunciation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85043655|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 English language|xPhonology, Historical.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85043644 650 0 English language|xGrammar, Generative.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh85043570 650 0 Linguistic change|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85077214|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 7 English language|xMiddle English|xVowels.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1711289 650 7 English language|xMiddle English.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1710955 650 7 English language|xOld English|xVowels.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1711332 650 7 English language|xOld English.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1710958 650 7 English language|xPronunciation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911536 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 English language|xPhonology, Historical.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911522 650 7 English language|xGrammar, Generative.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911276 650 7 Linguistic change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 999167 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aStenbrenden, Gjertrud Flermoen.|tLong- vowel shifts in English, c. 1050-1700|z9781107055759 |w(DLC) 2015028161|w(OCoLC)920680435 830 0 Studies in English language.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n88506556 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1159371|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
