Egyptian and Syrian intellectuals argued over the meaning of tanwir, Arabic for "enlightenment," and its significance for contemporary politics. They took up questions of human dignity, liberty, reason, tolerance, civil society, democracy, and violence. In Enlightenment on the Eve of Revolution, Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab offers a groundbreaking analysis of the tanwir debates and their import for the 2011 uprisings. Kassab locates these debates in their local context as well as in broader contemporary political and intellectual Arab history. She argues that the enlightenment they advocated was a form of political humanism that demanded the right of free and public use of reason. By calling for the restoration of human dignity and seeking a moral compass in the wake of the destruction wrought by brutal regimes, they understood tanwir as a humanist ideal. Kassab connects their debates to the Arab uprisings, arguing that their demands bear a striking resemblance to what was voiced on the streets of Egypt and Syria in 2011. Enlightenment on the Eve of Revolution is the first book to document these debates for the Anglophone audience and to analyze their importance for contemporary Egyptian and Syrian intellectual life and politics. Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab is associate professor of philosophy at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. She is the author of Contemporary Arab Thought: Cultural Critique in Comparative Perspective (Columbia, 2009), recipient of the prestigious Sheikh Zayed Book Award for its Arabic edition."--|cProvided by publisher. 546 In English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 21st century|2fast 648 7 1900-2099|2fast 650 0 Islam and secularism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh97002873|zEgypt.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80061791-781 650 0 Islam and secularism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh97002873|zSyria.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80061798-781 650 0 Islam and state|zEgypt.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008104939 650 0 Islam and state|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068426|zSyria.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061798-781 650 0 Civil society|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh90004194|zEgypt.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781 650 0 Civil society|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh90004194|zSyria.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061798-781 650 0 Enlightenment|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85044032|zEgypt.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061791-781 650 0 Enlightenment|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85044032|zSyria.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061798-781 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 650 7 Islam and secularism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 979887 650 7 Islam and state.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 979890 650 7 Civil society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862876 650 7 Enlightenment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/912527 651 0 Egypt|xIntellectual life|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008114913 651 0 Egypt|xIntellectual life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008114912|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012478 651 0 Syria|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80061798 |xIntellectual life|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00006346 651 0 Syria|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80061798 |xIntellectual life|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006115 651 7 Egypt.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208755 651 7 Syria.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208757 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKassab, Elizabeth Suzanne. |tEnlightenment on the eve of revolution.|dNew York : Columbia University Press, [2019]|z9780231176330|w(DLC) 2018048838|w(OCoLC)1089276262 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2088008|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
