Eschewing a narrow focus on any one theme, it seeks to understand eighteenth-century engagements with antiquity on their own terms, focusing on the contexts, questions, and agendas that led people to turn to the ancient past. The contributors show that a profound interest in antiquity permeated all spheres of intellectual and creative endeavour, from antiquarianism to political discourse, travel writing to portraiture, theology to education. They offer new perspectives on familiar figures, such as Rousseau and Hume, as well as insights into hitherto obscure antiquarians and scholars. What emerges is a richer, more textured understanding of the substantial eighteenth-century engagement with antiquity. Contributors are: Anthony Ossa-Richardson, Maria Giulia Franzoni, Thomas Hopkinson, Maeve O'Dwyer, Miriam Al Jamil, Kelsey Jackson Williams, Alan Montgomery, Marta Dieli, Tim Stuart-Buttle, Flora Champy"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on May 15, 2020). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Civilization, Classical|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85026450|xInfluence|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002005444|vCongresses.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Enlightenment|zEurope|vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009125033 650 7 Civilization, Classical|xInfluence.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/863000 650 7 Civilization, Classical.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/862996 650 7 Enlightenment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/912527 650 7 Civilization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862898 650 7 Antiquities.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/810745 650 7 Civilization|xClassical influences.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1352347 651 0 Europe|xCivilization|y18th century|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85045638|vCongresses.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 651 0 Europe|xCivilization|xClassical influences|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85045648|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 651 0 Europe|xAntiquities|vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008103404 651 7 Europe.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1245064 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1423772 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2lcgft|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026068 700 1 Loughlin, Felicity,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2019074593|eeditor. 700 1 Johnston, Alexandre,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n2019074595|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tAntiquity and Enlightenment culture |dLeiden : Brill, [2020]|z9789004405035|w(DLC) 2019051633 830 0 Metaforms ;|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2014078144|vv. 17. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2422639|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
