Several provisions of the law went into effect in 2010 (including requirements to cover children up to age 26 and to prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage based on preexisting conditions for children). Other provisions will go into effect during 2014, including the requirement for all individuals to purchase health insurance. In 2014, insurance purchasers will be allowed, but not obliged, to buy their coverage through newly established health insurance exchanges (HIEs)--marketplaces designed to make it easier for customers to comparison shop among plans and for low and moderate income individuals to obtain public subsidies to purchase private health insurance. The exchanges will offer a choice of private health plans, and all plans must include a standard core set of covered benefits, called essential health benefits (EHBs). The Department of Health and Human Services requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommend criteria and methods for determining and updating the EHBs. In response, the IOM convened two workshops in 2011 where experts from federal and state government, as well as employers, insurers, providers, consumers, and health care researchers were asked to identify current methods for determining medical necessity, and share decision-making approaches to determining which benefits would be covered and other benefit design practices. Essential health benefits summarizes the presentations in this workshop. The committee's recommendations will be released in a subsequent report. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 United States.|tPatient Protection and Affordable Care Act |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010066448 |vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001533 610 24 United States. 630 07 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (United States) |2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1916081 650 0 Medical policy|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008107275|xStates|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008678|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Right to health|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010111057|xStates|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008678|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Health insurance|zUnited States|xStates|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008123846|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Health insurance|zUnited States|xCosts|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2008123844|xForecasting|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005779|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Medical care, Cost of|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008107281|xForecasting|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005779|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Health services accessibility|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008105522|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Health care reform|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008105519|vCongresses.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Welfare economics|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85146027|vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001533 650 0 Fairness|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85046908|vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001533 650 2 State Health Plans|xeconomics.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D013221Q000191 650 2 Insurance, Health|xeconomics.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh /D007348Q000191 650 2 Insurance Benefits|xstandards.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D007342Q000592 650 2 Insurance Benefits|xeconomics.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/ mesh/D007342Q000191 650 7 Medical policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1014505 650 7 Right to health.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1759363 650 7 Health insurance.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1715839 650 7 Forecasting.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/931721 650 7 Medical care, Cost of.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1013902 650 7 Health services accessibility.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/953278 650 7 Health care reform.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 952850 650 7 Welfare economics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1173620 650 7 Fairness.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/919888 651 2 United States.|0https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1423772 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2lcgft|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026068 700 1 Ulmer, Cheryl.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2009180354 700 1 McFadden, Bernadette.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2009191963 700 1 Cacace, Cassandra.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2012014312 710 2 Institute of Medicine (U.S.).|bBoard on Health Care Services.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no99064513 710 2 Institute of Medicine (U.S.).|bCommittee on Defining and Revising an Essential Health Benefits Package for Qualified Health Plans.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2012014691 776 08 |iPrint version:|tPerspectives on essential health benefits.|dWashington, D.C. : National Academies Press, ©2012|z9780309215442|w(OCoLC)754743035 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=433032|zOnline eBook.
