The black death and the rise of the Ottomans -- 2. Natural disasters and the Ottoman state -- 3. Natural disasters and Ottoman communities -- 4. Individuals face disasters -- 5. Natural disasters at the end of empire -- Conclusion. 520 "This book explores the history of natural disasters in the Ottoman Empire and the responses to them on the state, communal, and individual levels. Yaron Ayalon argues that religious boundaries between Muslims and non-Muslims were far less significant in Ottoman society than commonly believed. Furthermore, the emphasis on Islamic principles and the presence of Islamic symbols in the public domain were measures the state took to enhance its reputation and political capital - occasional discrimination of non- Muslims was only a by-product of these measures. This study sheds new light on flight and behavioral patterns in response to impending disasters by combining historical evidence with studies in social psychology and sociology. Employing an approach that mixes environmental and social history with the psychology of disasters, this work asserts that the handling of such disasters was crucial to both the rise and the fall of the Ottoman Empire"-- |cProvided by publisher 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1288-1918|2fast 650 0 Disaster relief|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85038299|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zTurkey.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80070818-781 650 0 Plague|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85102591 |zTurkey.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80070818- 781 650 0 Famines|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85047075|zTurkey.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80070818-781 650 0 Earthquakes|zTurkey.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2004009354 650 7 Disaster relief|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/894767 650 7 Disaster relief.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 894731 650 7 Plague.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1065045 650 7 Famines.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/920590 650 7 BUSINESS & ECONOMICS|xInfrastructure.|2bisacsh 650 7 Earthquakes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/900899 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 651 0 Turkey|xHistory|yOttoman Empire, 1288-1918.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85138802 651 7 Turkey.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208963 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAyalon, Yaron, 1977-|tNatural disasters in the Ottoman Empire|z9781107072978|w(DLC) 2014027839 |w(OCoLC)883836491 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=919788|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
