He flees to the Texas panhandle with his lover Abby and little sister Linda, where they work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer. When Bill learns that the Farmer is ill and has less than a year to live, he encourages Abby to accept the man's attentions. The Farmer and Abby marry, and she and her "siblings" live in the big house, waiting for the Farmer to die, so Abby can inherit, and the three of them live happily ever after. But love seems to be a cure-all: the Farmer seems to be improving--and Abby is no longer seeing this as a marriage of convenience. From a landscape of panoramic vistas, vivid colors, and rich textures comes a timeless American idyll and a gritty evocation of turn-of- the-century labor. 521 8 MPAA rating: Rated PG. 538 DVD; Region 1, NTSC; Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround; widescreen, presentation aspect ratio 1.78:1; enhanced for 16:9 widescreen televisions. 546 In English with optional subtitles in English. 586 Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Nestor Almendros); Cannes Film Festival Best Director (Terrence Malick) 1979. 650 0 Man-woman relationships|vDrama.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008107215 650 0 Farmers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85047270|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80129616-781|vDrama.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001612 650 0 Triangles (Interpersonal relations)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh96008285|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n80129616-781|vDrama.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001612 650 7 Man-woman relationships.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1007080 650 7 Farmers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/921321 650 7 Triangles (Interpersonal relations)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1156439 650 7 Love triangles.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/ homoit0000976 651 7 Texas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210336 655 7 Drama.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423879 655 7 Feature films.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2011026247 655 7 Feature films.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1710384 655 7 Western films.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2011026735 655 7 Western films.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1710347 655 7 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.|2lcgft|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2011026725 655 7 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1710450 655 7 Video recordings.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2011026723 655 7 Video recordings.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1692913 655 7 Drama.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/ gf2014026297 700 1 Malick, Terrence,|d1943-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n86041335 700 1 Schneider, Bert,|d1933-2011.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no97049975 700 1 Schneider, Harold.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n86041338 700 1 Gere, Richard,|d1949-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n86041334 700 1 Adams, Brooke,|d1949-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n86041333 700 1 Shepard, Sam,|d1943-2017.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79151156 700 1 Manz, Linda,|d1961-2020.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n86041336 710 2 Paramount Pictures Corporation (1914-1927)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n90704959 710 2 Criterion Collection (Firm)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no98092622 710 2 Southwestern Writers Collection (Albert B.
