Smita Tewari Jassal uses these songs to explore how ideas of caste, gender, sexuality, labor, and power may be strengthened, questioned, and fine-tuned through music. At the heart of the book is a library of songs, in their original Bhojpuri and in English translation, framed by Jassal's insights into the complexities of gender and power. The significance of these folksongs, Jassal argues, lies in their suggesting and hinting at themes, rather than directly addressing them: women sing what they often cannot talk about. Women's lives, their feelings, their relationships, and their social and familial bonds are persuasively presented in song. For the ethnographer, the songs offer an entry into the everyday cultures of marginalized groups of women who have rarely been the focus of systematic analytical inquiry. 546 In English. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 Project Muse |bProject Muse Open Access 650 0 Music|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85088891|zIndia, North.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008030127-781 650 0 Folk songs, Bhojpuri|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85049947|zIndia, North|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008030127-781|xHistory and criticism.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001187 650 6 Musique|xAspect social|zInde (Nord) 650 6 Chansons folkloriques bhojpurī|zInde (Nord)|xHistoire et critique. 650 7 Music|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1030444 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 Folk songs, Bhojpuri.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 929792 650 7 MUSIC|xPrinted Music|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 MUSIC|xPrinted Music|vGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Sociology and anthropology.|2bicssc 650 7 Society and social sciences Society and social sciences. |2bicssc 650 7 Social and cultural anthropology, ethnography Mod Social and cultural anthropology, ethnography.|2bicssc 650 7 Anthropology.|2bicssc 651 0 India, North|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008030127|xSocial life and customs.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2001008851 651 6 Inde (Nord)|xMoeurs et coutumes. 651 7 North India.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1907007 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 Electronic books. .|2local 710 2 Project Muse,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n96089174|edistributor. 830 0 Book collections on Project MUSE. 856 40 |zOnline eBook.
