Summary |
Discover Southern Ethiopian polyphonic songs with the movie directors Samson Giorgis and Guillaume Terver. A hundred different ethnic groups, over 22 million people live in Souther Ethiopia. A region filled with ancestral cultures and living traditions, which have given birth to a widely-shared polyphonic tradition in spite of the religious, linguistic and social diversity across the region. Integrated into the social and private daily life, these polyphonic songs govern the rhythm of the work, celebrate the memory of the forefathers, remember the names of those who are far away. To produce this documentary, which was awarded the Bartok Prize at the 21st Bilan du Film Ethnographique and the special prize at the Vienna TV Awards in 2002, the movie directors Samson Giorgis and Guillaume Terver have travelled throughout southern Ethiopia to encounter and learn from the Dokko and Harari communities their polyphonic tradition. |
