The author's parents brought her from Bengal in northern India to the small town of Pittsburg, Kansas, in 1964, decades before you could find long-grain rice or plain yogurt in American grocery stores. Embracing American culture, the Mukerjee family ate hamburgers and softserve ice cream, took a visiting guru out on the lake in their motorboat, and joined the Shriners. As a girl and a young woman, the author traveled to her ancestral India, as well as to college and to Peace Corps service in Tunisia. Through her journeys and her marriage to an American man whose grandparents hailed from Germany and Sweden, she learned that her family was not alone in being a small pocket of culture sheltered from the larger world. In mourning the partial loss of her heritage, the author finds that, ultimately, heritage always finds other ways of coming to meet us. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Furstenau, Nina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2012073461|xChildhood and youth.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99004940 600 17 Furstenau, Nina.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1991414 650 0 Bengali Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh89000201|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Bengali Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh89000201|xFood.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005367 650 0 Bengali Americans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh89000201|xSocial life and customs.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008851 650 0 Cooking, Indic.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85031835 650 0 Food habits|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85050275|zKansas.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79007369-781 650 0 Food habits|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85050275|zIndia|zBengal.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n81059698-781 650 7 Bengali Americans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 830368 650 7 Food.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/930458 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 650 7 Cooking, Indic.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1753344 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY|xCultural Heritage.|2bisacsh 650 7 Food habits.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/930807 650 7 COOKING|xRegional & Ethnic|xIndian & South Asian.|2bisacsh 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 651 0 Kansas|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008106355 651 7 Kansas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204323 651 7 India|zBengal.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1213579 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aFurstenau, Nina Mukerjee, 1962-|tBiting through the skin.|dIowa City : University of Iowa Press, 2013|w(DLC) 2013005215 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=621517|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
