The agriculture sector and the food industry in general, however, have received comparatively little attention with respect to protection against terrorist incidents. This study aims to expand the current debate on domestic homeland security by assessing the vulnerabilities of the agricultural sector and the food chain to a deliberate act of biological terrorism. The author presents the current state of research on threats to agricultural livestock and produce, outlines the sector's importance to the U.S. economy, examines the capabilities that are needed to exploit the vulnerabilities in the food industry, and explores the likely outcomes of a successful attack. The author addresses the question of why terrorists have yet to employ agricultural assaults as a method of operation and offers proposed recommendations for the U.S. policymaking community. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Agriculture|xDefense measures|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85002425|zUnited States.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Civil defense|zUnited States.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85139930 650 0 Food industry and trade|xDefense measures|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85050285|zUnited States. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 650 0 Bioterrorism|zUnited States|xPrevention.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007102021 650 7 Agriculture|xDefense measures.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/801406 650 7 Civil defense.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/862456 650 7 Food industry and trade|xDefense measures.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/930858 650 7 Bioterrorism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/832824 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 710 1 United States.|bDepartment of Defense.|bOffice of the Secretary of Defense.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n86019386 776 08 |iPrint version:|aChalk, Peter.|tHitting America's soft underbelly.|dSanta Monica, CA : Rand Corp., 2004 |z0833035223|w(DLC) 2003026834|w(OCoLC)53900640 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.7249/mg135osd|zOnline ebook.
