In Nigeria's Edo State, once the showcase of scientific forestry in West Africa, large-scale forest conversion and the virtual depletion of timber stocks are invariably attributed to recent failures in forest management, and are seen as yet another instance of how "things fall apart" in Nigeria. Through an in-depth historical and ethnographic study of forestry in Edo State, this book challenges this routine linking of political and ecological crisis narratives. It shows that the roots of many of today's problems lie in scientific forest management itself, rather than its recent abandonment, and moreover that many "illegal" local practices improve rather than reduce biodiversity and forest cover. The book therefore challenges preconceptions about contemporary Nigeria and highlights the need to reevaluate current understandings of what constitutes "good governance" in tropical forestry. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Forest management|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85050603|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zNigeria.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79056412-781 650 0 Forest policy|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85050611|zNigeria.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79056412-781 650 7 Forest management.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 932231 650 7 BUSINESS & ECONOMICS|xReal Estate|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Forest policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/932311 650 7 SCIENCE|xEnvironmental Science.|2bisacsh 651 7 Nigeria.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205229 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Electronic books.|2lcgft 776 08 |iPrint version:|aVon Hellermann, Pauline.|tThings fall apart?|bFirst edition.|dNew York Oxford : Berghahn Books, 2013|z9780857459893|w(DLC) 2013005540|w(OCoLC)828883897 830 0 Studies in environmental anthropology and ethnobiology ; |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2005014478|vv. 18. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=638317|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
