Meaningful Woods: Sylvan Metaphors and Arboreal Symbols. 520 From the late eighteenth century, Germans increasingly identified the fate of their nation with that of their woodlands. A variety of groups soon mobilized the 'German forest' as a national symbol, though often in ways that suited their own social, economic, and political interests. The German Forest is the first book-length history of the development and contestation of the concept of 'German' woodlands.Jeffrey K. Wilson challenges the dominant interpretation that German connections to nature were based in agrarian romanticism rather than efforts at modernization. He explores a variety of conflicts over the symbol - from demands on landowners for public access to woodlands, to state attempts to integrate ethnic Slavs into German culture through forestry, and radical nationalist visions of woodlands as a model for the German 'race'. Through impressive primary and archival research, Wilson demonstrates that in addition to uniting Germans, the forest as a national symbol could also serve as a vehicle for protest and strife. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Forests and forestry|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh91002342|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Forests and forestry|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85050707|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zGermany|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80125931-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Forest management|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85050603|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n80125931-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Landscape protection|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85074474|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80125931-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 National characteristics, German.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85089977 650 0 Germans.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85054461 650 7 Forests and forestry.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 932632 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Forests and forestry|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/932732 650 7 Forest management.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 932231 650 7 Germans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/942100 650 7 Landscape protection.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 992049 650 7 HISTORY|zEurope|zGermany.|2bisacsh 650 7 National characteristics, German.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033433 650 7 BUSINESS & ECONOMICS|xReal Estate|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 651 7 Germany.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210272 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWilson, Jeffrey K.|tGerman Forest : Nature, Identity, and the Contestation of a National Symbol, 1871-1914.|dToronto : University of Toronto Press, ©2000|z9781442640993 830 0 German and European studies.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2006094211 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=682674|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
