This major critical study shows, contrary to the accepted views, that in fact, atheism was not the common bond of a majority of the members and that, far from being alienated figures, most of the members were privileged and publicly successful citizens devoted to peaceful and gradual reform. Alan Charles Kors determines the coterie's membership and discovers it to have been a diverse assemblage of philosophes, men of letters, and scientists. Analyzing the thought and behavior of those members who lived past 1789, the author argues that the hostility to the Revolution expressed by the coterie's survivors was fully consistent with their world view."-- |cProvided by publisher. 546 In English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Holbach, Paul Henri Thiry,|cbaron d',|d1723-1789|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80106712|xFriends and associates.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00005818 600 11 Holbach, Paul Henri Thiry,|cbaron d',|d1723-1789. 600 17 Holbach, Paul Henri Thiry,|cbaron d',|d1723-1789.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/59413 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Intellectuals|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008123933|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781|xHistory|y18th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006124 650 0 Intellectuals|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008123933|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781|xAttitudes.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006216 650 0 Enlightenment|zFrance.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008103214 650 0 Philosophy, French|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85100914 650 7 Friends and associates.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1353140 650 7 Intellectuals.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/975799 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Enlightenment.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/912527 650 7 Philosophy, French.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1060959 651 0 Paris (France)|xIntellectual life|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85098065|y18th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012474 651 7 France|zParis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205283 651 7 France.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204289 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKors, Alan Charles.|tD'Holbach's coterie : an enlightenment in Paris.|dPrinceton, New Jersey : Princeton University Press, ©1976|hxi, 359 pages |kPrinceton legacy library.|z9780691617244 830 0 Princeton legacy library.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2014116408 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=946872|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
