Although frequently featured in histories of the United States and Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century, and in discussions and analyses of British foreign policy, he has remained an ill-defined figure. In Lord Lyons: A Diplomat in an Age of Nationalism and War, Brian Jenkins explains the man and examines his career. Based on a staggering study of primary sources, he presents a convincing portrait of a subject who rarely revealed himself personally. Though he avoided publicity, Lyons came to be regarded as his nation's premier diplomat as his career took him to the heart of the great international issues and crises of his generation. As minister to the United States he played a vital role in preserving Anglo-American peace and was a powerful voice opposing Anglo-French intervention in the Civil War. While ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, he helped to prevent French control of the Suez Canal then under construction. In France, he maintained an amiable and constructive relationship with a bitter nation struggling to reorganize itself and its constitution after the Franco-Prussian War. For many historians Lord Lyons has been difficult to ignore but hard to admire. In rescuing him as a truly important historical figure, Jenkins details for the first time the personal and public strategies Lyons employed through decades of exemplary diplomatic service on both sides of the Atlantic. -- Provided by publisher. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Lyons, Richard Bickerton Pemell Lyons,|cEarl,|d1817-1887. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n96044820 600 17 Lyons, Richard Bickerton Pemell Lyons,|cEarl,|d1817-1887. |2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/374355 647 7 Franco-Prussian War|d(1870-1871)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/933683 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1837-1901|2fast 648 7 1861-1865|2fast 648 7 1800-1901|2fast 650 0 Diplomats|zGreat Britain|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008102284 650 0 Diplomatic and consular service, British|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87003028|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Franco-Prussian War, 1870-1871|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85051543|xDiplomatic history. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005617 650 7 Diplomats.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/894415 650 7 Diplomatic and consular service, British.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/894237 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Diplomatic history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1905576 650 7 International relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/977053 651 0 Great Britain|xForeign relations|y1837-1901.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056711 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|y1861-1865.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140081 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 1 Jenkins, Brian, 1939-, author.|tLord Lyons. |w(CaOONL)20149023871 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=827401|zOnline eBook.
