Drawing on notions of secularization as a phenomenon of ambivalence or dualism in which religion continues to exist alongside secularity in exerting influence on modern French thought, author Scott M. Powers enlists psychoanalytic theory on mourning and sublimation, the philosophical concept of the sublime, Charles Taylor's theory of religious and secular "cross-pressures," and William James's psychology of conversion to account for the survival of religious themes in Baudelaire, Zola, Huysmans, and Cľine. For Powers, Baudelaire's prose poems, Zola's experimental novels, and Huysmans's and Cľine's early narratives attempt to account for evil by redefining the traditionally religious concept along secular lines. However, when unmitigated by the mechanisms of irony and sublimation, secular confrontation with the dark and seemingly absurd dimension of man leads modern writers such as Huysmans and Cľine, paradoxically, to embrace a religious or quasi-religious understanding of good and evil. In the end, Powers finds that how authors cope with the reality of suffering and human wickedness has a direct bearing on the ability to sustain a secular vision. 588 0 Vendor-supplied metadata. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 21st century|2fast 648 7 1900-2099|2fast 650 0 French literature|y20th century|xHistory and criticism. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008104109 650 0 French literature|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85051865|y21st century|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002012478|xHistory and criticism.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001187 650 0 Good and evil in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh94004490 650 0 Ethics in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh94004075 650 0 Secularization|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85119461|zFrance.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79006404-781 650 7 French literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 934688 650 7 Good and evil in literature.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/944908 650 7 Ethics in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 915860 650 7 Secularization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1110738 651 7 France.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204289 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9781557537416|z1557537410|w(DLC) 2015035809|w(OCoLC)914195351 830 0 Purdue studies in Romance literatures ;|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n92070290|vv. 66. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1228429|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
