When Prussian forces completely blockaded Paris, isolating the city from the outside world, Parisians turned to literature to resist the enemy, to fill the idle hours under siege, and to articulate their place in history. This cultural boom was a conscious effort on the part of literary institutions like newspapers, publishers, and theaters to ensure the viability of their industries during a period of political uncertainty. To do so, many publishers, editors, and directors sought legitimacy through populism, promoting literature written by anonymous and unknown authors or that spoke to populist ideas. A study of national tragedy on a local scale, The Culture of War goes beyond traditional narratives of communal or individual psychology, and studies institutional responses to financial and political instability, viewing literature as a product of economic and political forces."--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (JSTOR, viewed November 30, 2020). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 Siege of Paris|c(Paris, France :|d1870-1871)|2fast|0https: //id.worldcat.org/fast/1354891 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Books and reading|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2007101956|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79058874-781|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Literature and society|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008107029|zParis|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79058874-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 Book industries and trade|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2009117354|zParis|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79058874-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006167 650 0 French literature|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85051865|zFrance|zParis|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n79058874-781|xHistory and criticism.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001187 650 7 Books and reading.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 836454 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Literature and society.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1000096 650 7 Book industries and trade.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/836171 650 7 French literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 934688 650 7 Manners and customs.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007815 651 0 Paris (France)|xHistory|ySiege, 1870-1871.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh95000776 651 0 Paris (France)|xSocial life and customs|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85098072 651 7 France|zParis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205283 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|z1789621925|z9781789621921 |w(OCoLC)1153025556 830 0 Studies in modern and contemporary France ;|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2019068879|v6. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2699063|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
