Whereas cross-cultural exchange has typically been understood through the lens of male-centered translation work, this study, which is grounded in the relations between the west and Byzantium, examines cross-cultural marriage as a medium of literary and cultural exchange, one in which womens work was equally important as mens. Moores readings of Old French and Medieval Greek texts reveal the extent to which women challenged the cultures into which they married and shaped their new courtly environments. Through the lens of medieval gender and postcolonial theory, Exchanges in Exoticism demonstrates how the process of cultural exchange - and empire building - extends well beyond our traditional assumptions about gender roles in the medieval Mediterranean. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 To 1500|2fast 650 0 French literature|yTo 1500|xHistory and criticism.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008104133 650 0 Byzantine literature|xHistory and criticism.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007102285 650 0 French literature|yTo 1500|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh85051866|xMediterranean influences.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006615 650 0 Women in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85147587 650 0 Sex role in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85120668 650 0 Nobility in literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85092143 650 0 National characteristics, French, in literature.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh94007448 650 7 French literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 934688 650 7 Byzantine literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 843235 650 7 Women in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1177912 650 7 Sex role in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1114649 650 7 Nobility in literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1038296 650 7 National characteristics, French, in literature.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1033428 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMoore, Megan, 1977-, author.|tExchanges in exoticism|z9781442644694|w(OCoLC)860349374 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=693841|zOnline eBook.
