The seat of this power is the female genitalia. Wielding branches or pestles, they strip naked and slap their genitals and bare breasts to curse and expel the forces of evil. In An Intimate Rebuke Laura S. Grillo draws on fieldwork in Côte d'Ivoire that spans three decades to illustrate how these rituals of Female Genital Power (FGP) constitute religious and political responses to abuses of power. When deployed in secret, FGP operates as spiritual warfare against witchcraft; in public, it serves as a political activism. During Côte d'Ivoire's civil wars FGP challenged the immoral forces of both rebels and the state. Grillo shows how the ritual potency of the Mothers' nudity and the conjuration of their sex embodies a moral power that has been foundational to West African civilization. Highlighting the remarkable continuity of the practice across centuries while foregrounding the timeliness of FGP in contemporary political resistance, Grillo shifts perspectives on West African history, ethnography, comparative religious studies, and postcolonial studies. 588 Description based on print version record. 590 Project Muse |bProject Muse Open Access 650 0 Older women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85002160|xReligious life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2002006572|zCôte d'Ivoire.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n82047825-781 650 0 Older women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85002160|xPolitical activity|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011434|zCôte d'Ivoire.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82047825-781 650 0 Generative organs, Female|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85053831|xSymbolic aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001009084|zCôte d'Ivoire.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82047825-781 650 0 Generative organs, Female|xReligious aspects.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2019003794 650 0 Generative organs, Female|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85053831|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zCôte d'Ivoire.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82047825-781 650 6 Femmes âgees|zCôte-d'Ivoire|xVie religieuse. 650 6 Femmes âgees|xActivite politique|zCôte-d'Ivoire. 650 6 Organes genitaux femelles|xAspect symbolique|zCôte- d'Ivoire. 650 6 Organes genitaux femelles|xAspect religieux. 650 6 Organes genitaux femelles|xAspect politique|zCôte- d'Ivoire. 650 7 Religion.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1093763 650 7 Generative organs, Female|xReligious aspects.|2fast|0https ://id.worldcat.org/fast/2006576 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xMinority Studies.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xDiscrimination & Race Relations.|2bisacsh 650 7 Social & cultural anthropology, ethnography.|2bicssc 650 7 Older women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1199159 650 7 Religious life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1094112 650 7 Political participation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1069386 650 7 Generative organs, Female.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/939912 651 0 Côte d'Ivoire|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n82047825|xReligion.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002007663 651 7 Côte d'Ivoire.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1219323 655 7 Electronic books. .|2local 710 2 Project Muse,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n96089174|edistributor. 830 0 Book collections on Project MUSE. 830 0 Religious cultures of African and African diaspora people. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2015030586 856 40 |zOnline eBook.
