Barraclough combines ambitious historical sweep with an on-the-ground investigation of contemporary life in this iconic western suburb. She is particularly intrigued by the Valley's many rural elements, such as dirt roads, tack-and-feed stores, horse-keeping districts, citrus groves, and movie ranches. Far from natural or undeveloped spaces, these rural characteristics are, she shows, the result of deliberate urban planning decisions that have shaped the Valley over the course of more than a hundred years. The Valley's entwined history of urban development and rural preservation has real ramifications today for patterns of racial and class inequality and especially for the evolving meaning of whiteness. Immersing herself in meetings of homeowners' associations, equestrian organizations, and redistricting committees, Barraclough uncovers the racial biases embedded in rhetoric about "open space" and "western heritage." The Valley's urban cowboys enjoy exclusive, semirural landscapes alongside the opportunities afforded by one of the world's largest cities. Despite this enviable position, they have at their disposal powerful articulations of both white victimization and, with little contradiction, color-blind politics. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 White people|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85146547|zCalifornia|zSan Fernando Valley|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117094-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Landscapes|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85074392|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00002758|zCalifornia|zSan Fernando Valley |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117094-781 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 0 Urbanization|zCalifornia|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2010117567|zSan Fernando Valley|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117094-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Social change|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85123918|zCalifornia|zSan Fernando Valley|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117094-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Cultural pluralism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85103571|zCalifornia|zSan Fernando Valley |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85117094-781 |xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99005024 650 7 White people.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1174816 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Landscapes|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1735942 650 7 Landscapes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1735625 650 7 Urbanization.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1162722 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122310 650 7 Cultural pluralism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1715991 651 0 San Fernando Valley (Calif.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85117094|xRace relations.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00007552 651 0 San Fernando Valley (Calif.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85117094|xRural conditions.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00007670 651 0 San Fernando Valley (Calif.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85117094|xGeography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005919 651 0 San Fernando Valley (Calif.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85117094|xSocial conditions.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 651 7 California|zSan Fernando Valley.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1242395 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBarraclough, Laura R.|tMaking the San Fernando Valley.|dAthens : University of Georgia Press, ©2011|z9780820335629|w(DLC) 2010015808|w(OCoLC)610018954 830 0 Geographies of justice and social transformation ;|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2009171766|v3. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=343604|zOnline eBook.
