Native speakers of the three languages were asked to design visual representations of expressions referring to baldness phenomena in an online experiment. These sets of visualizations are used to determine conceptual overlap or distance between expressions in the three languages, resulting in lexical-conceptual 'maps' for MALE BALDNESS. The study is discussed against the background of an embodied, perceptual symbol-based understanding of linguistic meaning. An additional part of the book applies this perspective to the issue of translation, developing a process model of translation activity based on the concept of cognitive equivalence. The book presents a novel approach to lexical semantics, tested through an innovative experimental method grounded in cognitive linguistic theory. It will be highly interesting to scholars in cognitive semantics, contrastive semantics, embodied cognition and cognitive translation studies"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on January 18, 2019). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Mental representation.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88004829 650 0 German language|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85054365|xPsychological aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011485 650 0 English language|xPsychological aspects.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85043660 650 0 Japanese language|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85069643|xPsychological aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011485 650 0 Baldness|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85011156|xTerminology.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001987 650 7 Mental representation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1016620 650 7 German language|xPsychological aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/941684 650 7 German language.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 941408 650 7 English language|xPsychological aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911546 650 7 Japanese language|xPsychological aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/981700 650 7 Japanese language.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 981565 650 7 Baldness.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/825760 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSickinger, Pawel.|tMental models across languages.|dAmsterdam ; Philadelphia : John Benjamins Publishing Company, [2018]|z9789027201782|w(DLC) 2018034771 830 0 Human cognitive processing ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n98017243|vv. 63. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1946887|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
