Drawing on extensive verbatim stenographic records, he analyzes the ecumenical councils from A.D. 325 to 553, in which participants gave authority to doctrinal choices by majority vote. The author investigates the sometimes astonishing bloodshed and violence that marked the background to church council proceedings, and from there goes on to describe the planning and staging of councils, the emperors' role, the routines of debate, the participants' understanding of the issues, and their views on God's intervention in their activities. He concludes with a look at the significance of the councils and their doctrinal decisions within the history of Christendom. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 30 - 600|2fast 650 0 Councils and synods.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85033409 650 0 Church history|yPrimitive and early church, ca. 30-600. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85025620 650 0 God (Christianity)|xHistory of doctrines|yEarly church, ca. 30-600.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85055526 650 7 Councils and synods.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 881192 650 7 God (Christianity)|xHistory of doctrines.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1735520 650 7 God (Christianity)|xHistory of doctrines|xEarly church. |2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1905770 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMacMullen, Ramsay, 1928-|tVoting about God in early church councils.|dNew Haven : Yale University Press, ©2006|z0300115962|z9780300115963|w(DLC) 2005034666 |w(OCoLC)62525077 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=192276|zOnline eBook.
