Telling the story of the first years of colonial Sydney in a new and original way, this provocative book is the first detailed account of the warfare that occurred across the Sydney region from the arrival of a British expedition in 1788 to the last recorded conflict in the area in 1817. The Sydney Wars sheds new light on how British and Aboriginal forces developed military tactics and how the violence played out. Analysing the paramilitary roles of settlers and convicts and the militia defensive systems that were deployed, it shows that white settlers lived in fear, while Indigenous people fought back as their land and resources were taken away. Stephen Gapps details the violent conflict that formed part of a long period of colonial strategic efforts to secure the Sydney basin and, in time, the rest of the continent. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 Great Britain.|bArmy|xHistory. 610 16 Grande-Bretagne.|bArmy|xHistoire. 610 17 Great Britain.|bArmy|2fast 650 0 Aboriginal Australians|xWars. 650 0 Aboriginal Australians|xTreatment|xHistory. 650 0 Aboriginal Australians|xGovernment relations|xHistory. 650 7 HISTORY|xAustralia & New Zealand.|2bisacsh 650 7 Aboriginal Australians|xGovernment relations|2fast 650 7 British colonies|2fast 650 7 Colonization|2fast 650 7 Race relations|2fast 651 0 Australia|xRace relations|xHistory. 651 0 Australia|xColonization|xHistory. 651 0 Great Britain|xColonies|xHistory, Military. 651 7 Australia|2fast|1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/ E39QbtfRv8PPH7gCqhkJ8DK8bM 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 History|2fast 655 7 Military history|2fast 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGapps, Stephen.|tSydney wars.|dSydney, NSW : NewSouth Publishing, University of New South Wales Press Ltd, [2018]|z1742232140|w(OCoLC)1022778292 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1828133|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
