In this volatile political atmosphere, the aim of the NCCL was to ensure that civil liberties were a central component of political discourse. Chris Moores's new study shows how the NCCL - now Liberty - had to balance the interests of extremist allies with the desire to become a respectable force campaigning for human rights and civil liberties. From new social movements of the 1960s and 1970s to the formation of the Human Rights Act in 1998, this study traces the NCCL's development over the last eighty years. It enables us to observe shifts and continuities in forms of political mobilisation throughout the twentieth century, changes in discourse about extensions and retreats of freedoms, as well as the theoretical conceptualisation and practical protection of rights and liberties. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 Great Britain.|tHuman Rights Act 1998. 610 20 Liberty (Great Britain)|xHistory. 610 27 Liberty (Great Britain)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00693588 630 07 Human Rights Act 1998 (Great Britain)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01390953 650 0 Civil rights|zGreat Britain|xHistory. 650 0 Human rights|zGreat Britain|xHistory. 650 7 HISTORY|zEurope|xWestern.|2bisacsh 650 7 Civil rights.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00862627 650 7 Human rights.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00963285 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919741 651 0 Great Britain|xPolitics and government|xHistory. 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204623 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMoores, Chris.|tCivil liberties and human rights in Twentieth-century Britain.|dCambridge : Cambridge University Press 2017|z9781107088610 |w(OCoLC)962330960 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1458585|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
