Ruth Gutmann's memoir, first published in Germany in 2002, recounts her life not only as a concentration camp inmate and survivor, but also as a sister and daughter. Ruth; her twin sister, Eva; stepmother, Mania; and father, Samuel Herskovits, were interned in both Thereisenstadt and Auschwitz-Birkenau between June 1943 and March 1944, where all but Gutmann and her sister perished. Ruth and Eva spent the remainder of the war in numerous other camps. Gutmann's memoir is compelling in several respects. It spans her birth and early life in Hannover, Germany; her escape to Holland on a kindertransport; her forced return to Hannover; her deportation to the concentration camps (where Ruth and Eva attracted the attention of Josef Mengele, though they were ultimately spared from his murderous studies of twin siblings); and her life postliberation. Particularly striking is Gutmann's portrait of her father, Samuel, a leader in the Jewish community of Hannover who was forced under extreme pressure to communicate and, in some cases, cooperate with Nazi officials. Gutmann uses her own memories as well as years of reflection and academic study to reevaluate his role in their community. A Final Reckoning provides not only insights into Gutmann's own experience as a child in the midst of the atrocities of the Holocaust, but also a window into the lives of those, like her father, who were forced to carry on and comply with the regime that would ultimately bring about their demise"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Herskovits-Gutmann, Ruth,|d1928-|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2002072708 600 17 Herskovits-Gutmann, Ruth,|d1928-|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/482566 647 7 Jewish Holocaust|d(1939-1945)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/958866 648 7 1933-1945|2fast 648 7 1933 - 1945|2fast 650 0 Jews|zGermany|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85070460|zHannover|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79093323-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Jewish children in the Holocaust|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh96005877|zGermany|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80125931-781|vBiography. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Jews|zGermany|xHistory|y1933-1945.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85070466 650 0 Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)|vPersonal narratives.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061518 650 0 Fathers and daughters|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85047454|zGermany.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80125931-781 650 0 Twin sisters|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2010003684|zGermany.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n80125931-781 650 7 Jews.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/983135 650 7 Jewish children in the Holocaust.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/982706 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Fathers and daughters.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /921890 650 7 Twin sisters.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1762227 651 0 Hannover (Germany)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79093323|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99001237 651 7 Germany|zHannover.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1206136 651 7 Germany.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210272 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Personal narratives.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1423843 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Autobiographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026047 655 7 Autobiographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919894 655 7 Personal narratives.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/genreForms/gf2014026142 776 08 |iPrint version:|aHerskovits-Gutmann, Ruth.|tFinal reckoning : a Hannover family's life and death in the Shoah.|dTuscaloosa : University Alabama Press, [2013] |hxxiii, 206 pages|kJudaic studies series|z9780817318093 |w(DLC) 2013026630 830 0 Judaic studies series (Unnumbered)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n88506003 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=670123|zOnline eBook.
