In this book, Denise D. Meringolo shows that the roots of public history actually reach back to the nineteenth century, when the federal government entered into the work of collecting and preserving the nation's natural and cultural resources. Yet it was not until the emergence of the education-oriented National Park Service history program in the 1920s and 1930s that public history found an institutional home. Even then, tensions between administrators in Washington and practitioners on the ground at National Parks, monuments, and museums continued to redefine the scope and substance of the field. The process of definition persists to this day as public historians establish a growing presence in major universities throughout the United States and abroad."--Page 4 of cover 546 English. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 10 United States.|bNational Park Service|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79022809|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 610 17 United States.|bNational Park Service.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/530450 650 0 Nature conservation|zUnited States|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010103172 650 0 National parks and reserves|zUnited States|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010103170 650 0 Historical museums|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85061198|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Historic sites|xConservation and restoration|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008105669|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Historic preservation|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008105668|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Public history|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2010105280|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Nature conservation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1034632 650 7 National parks and reserves.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033642 650 7 Historical museums.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 958145 650 7 Historic sites|xConservation and restoration.|2fast|0https ://id.worldcat.org/fast/957852 650 7 Public history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1082429 650 7 Historic preservation.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /957821 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|xState & Local|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMeringolo, Denise D., 1968-|tMuseums, monuments, and national parks.|dAmherst : University of Massachusetts Press, ©2012|z9781558499409|w(DLC) 2012016865|w(OCoLC)768167109 830 0 Public history in historical perspective.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010167571 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1246456|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
