Visitors boat to its islands, stroll through its gardens, worship in its temples, and celebrate it in poetry and painting. Xiaolin Duan examines the interplay between cultural norms and the natural environment around West Lake during the Song dynasty (960-1279). After the Song lost north China to the Jurchens and the imperial court fled south, a new capital was established at Hangzhou in 1127, making the area the national political and cultural center. Duan shows how leisure activities in, on, and around West Lake influenced visitors' conceptualization of nature and sparked the emergence of the lake as a tourist destination, and how the natural landscape played an active role in shaping social pursuits and cultural constructs. Incorporating evidence from miscellanies, local and temple gazetteers, paintings, maps, poems, and anecdotes, she explores the complexity of the lake as an interactive site where ecological and economic concerns contended and where spiritual pursuits overlapped with aesthetic ones. The book will appeal to readers interested in urban and environmental history, cultural geography, and the sociology of tourism"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on May 05, 2020). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 960-1279|2fast 650 0 Natural areas|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh88003598|zWest Lake.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85146211-781 650 0 Cultural landscapes|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2006005972|zChina|zWest Lake|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85146211-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Human ecology|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2009126599|zWest Lake|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85146211-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Tourism|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2008112929|zWest Lake|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85146211-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Natural areas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1033960 650 7 Cultural landscapes.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1740895 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Human ecology.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/962941 650 7 Tourism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1153142 651 0 West Lake (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85146211|xDescription and travel.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001278 651 0 China|xHistory|ySong dynasty, 960-1279.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024066 651 0 West Lake (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85146211|xIn art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002011412 651 0 West Lake (China)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh85146211|xIn literature.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002011414 651 7 China|zWest Lake.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1243268 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aDuan, Xiaolin.|tThe rise of West Lake |dSeattle : University of Washington Press, [2020] |z9780295747125|w(DLC) 2019034304 830 0 China Program book.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2008154151 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2453491|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
