Out of a Baptist revival upbringing, John, Asa, Judson, and Abby Hutchinson transformed themselves in the 1840s into national icons, taking up the reform issues of their age and singing out especially for temperance and antislavery reform. This engaging book is the first to tell the full story of the Hutchinsons, how they contributed to the transformation of American culture, and how they originated the marketable American protest song. Through concerts, writings, sheet music publications, and books of lyrics the "Hutchinson Family Singers" established a new space for civic action, a place at the intersection of culture, reform, religion, and politics. The book documents the Hutchinsons' impact on abolition and other reform projects and offers an original conception of the rising importance of popular culture in antebellum America. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Hutchinson Family (Singers)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n81101071 610 24 Hutchinson Family (Singers) 610 27 Hutchinson Family (Singers)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/559894 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800 - 1899|2fast 650 0 Singers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85122826|zNew Hampshire|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79007325-781|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Antislavery movements|zUnited States|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2007100463 650 7 Singers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1119301 650 7 Antislavery movements.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /810800 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 651 7 New Hampshire.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204318 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026049 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGac, Scott.|tSinging for freedom.|dNew Haven : Yale University Press, ©2007|z0300111983 |z9780300111989|w(DLC) 2006029555|w(OCoLC)71286689 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=204466|zOnline eBook.
