The discovery of previously unknown philosophical texts from the Axial Age is revolutionizing our understanding of Chinese intellectual history. Buried Ideas presents and discusses four texts found on brush-written slips of bamboo and their seemingly unprecedented political philosophy. Written in the regional script of Chu during the Warring States period (475-221 BCE), all of the works discuss Yao's abdication to Shun and are related to but differ significantly from the core texts of the classical period, such as the Mencius and Zhuangzi. Notably, these works evince an unusually meritocratic stance, and two even advocate abdication over hereditary succession as a political ideal. Sarah Allan includes full English translations and her own modern-character editions of the four works examined: Tang Yú zhi dao, Zi Gao, Rongchengshi, and Bao xun. In addition, she provides an introduction to Chu- script bamboo-slip manuscripts and the complex issues inherent in deciphering them"--Publisher's website. 546 Texts written by and large in English, but occassionally in Chinese. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 611 27 Warring States (China : 403-221 B.C.)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01355302 648 7 To 221 B.C|2fast 648 7 To 1500|2fast 648 7 To 600|2fast 650 0 Ideals (Philosophy)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85064136|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zChina|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79091151-781|xHistory|yTo 1500|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006121 |vSources.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002012007 650 0 Merit (Ethics)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85083844|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00005651|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n79091151-781|xHistory|yTo 1500|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006121|vSources. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 650 0 Political science|zChina|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008109682|yTo 1500|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012483|vSources. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 650 0 Manuscripts, Chinese.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85080701 650 0 Chinese language|yTo 600|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85024302|vTexts.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001271 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Kings and rulers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 987694 650 7 Abdication.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1198526 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Ideals (Philosophy)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 966854 650 7 Merit (Ethics)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1017192 650 7 Political science.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1069781 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 650 7 Manuscripts, Chinese.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1008310 650 7 Chinese language.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 857383 651 0 China|xHistory|yWarring States, 403-221 B.C.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024038|vSources. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 651 0 China|xPolitics and government|yTo 221 B.C.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85024154|vSources. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 651 0 China|xKings and rulers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85024149|xAbdication|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002069|xHistory|vSources.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012008 651 0 China|xIntellectual life|yTo 221 B.C.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85024140|vSources.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012007 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 655 0 Electronic book. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Sources.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 655 7 Texts.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423705 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aAllan, Sarah.|tBuried ideas.|dAlbany : State University of New York Press, [2015]|z9781438457772 |w(DLC) 2014041449|w(OCoLC)908715499 830 0 SUNY series in Chinese philosophy and culture.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86724503 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1086328|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
