As elsewhere in North Africa and in the wider developing world, the colonial period in Morocco (1912-1956) established a new type of political field in which notions about and relationships among politics and identity formation were fundamentally transformed. Instead of privileging top-down processes of colonial state formation or bottom-up processes of local resistance, the analysis in Making Morocco focuses on interactions between state and society. Jonathan Wyrtzen demonstrates how, during the Protectorate period, interactions among a wide range of European and local actors indelibly politicized four key dimensions of Moroccan identity: religion, ethnicity, territory, and the role of the Alawid monarchy. This colonial inheritance is reflected today in ongoing debates over th the public role of Islam, religious tolerance, and the memory of Morocco's Jews; recent reforms regarding women's legal status; the monarchy's multi-culturalist recognition of Tamazight (Berber) as a national language alongside Arabic; the still-unresolved territorial dispute over the Western Sahara; and the monarchy's continued symbolic and practical dominance of the Moroccan political field. -- Inside jacket flaps. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1912-1956|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Nationalism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85090150|zMorocco|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79069715-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Identity politics|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2009000728|zMorocco|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79069715-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Ethnicity|xPolitical aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008119896|zMorocco|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79069715-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002006165 650 0 National characteristics, Moroccan.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001007941 650 7 Nationalism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1033832 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Identity politics.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1747531 650 7 Ethnicity|xPolitical aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/916047 650 7 National characteristics, Moroccan.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033481 651 0 Morocco|xHistory|y1912-1956.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00001729 651 7 Morocco.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205592 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWyrtzen, Jonathan, 1973-|tMaking Morocco |z9781501700231|w(DLC) 2015026108|w(OCoLC)913164095 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1132915|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
