However, Daniel O'Neill turns that latter belief on its head. This fresh and innovative book shows that Burke was a passionate supporter and staunch defender of the British Empire in the eighteenth century, whether in the New World, India, or Ireland. Moreover--and against a growing body of contemporary scholarship that rejects the very notion that Burke was an exemplar of conservatism --O'Neill demonstrates that Burke's defense of empire was in fact ideologically consistent with his conservative opposition to the French Revolution. Burke's logic of empire relied on two opposing but complementary theoretical strategies: Ornamentalism, which stressed cultural similarities between "civilized" societies, as he understood them, and Orientalism, which stressed the putative cultural differences distinguishing "savage" societies from their "civilized" counterparts. This incisive book also shows that Burke's argument had lasting implications, as his development of these two justifications for empire prefigured later intellectual defenses of British imperialism"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Burke, Edmund,|d1729-1797|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79040055|xCriticism and interpretation.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005576 600 10 Burke, Edmund,|d1729-1797|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79040055|xPolitical and social views.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002011435 600 17 Burke, Edmund,|d1729-1797.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/33664 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Imperialism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85064628|y18th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002012474 650 7 Criticism and interpretation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1198648 650 7 Political and social views.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1353986 650 7 Imperialism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/968126 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 651 0 Great Britain|xPolitics and government|y18th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056900 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 776 08 |iPrint version:|aO'Neill, Daniel I., 1967-|tEdmund Burke and the conservative logic of empire|z9780520287822|w(DLC) 2015035745|w(OCoLC)922799492 830 0 Berkeley series in British studies ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2011084753|v10. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1132460|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
