This richly detailed book brings together disparate skeins of the past--including little-known oral histories, native texts, ethnohistory, and archaeological excavations --to present a vivid new view of how native cultures fared under these two colonial systems. Kent Lightfoot's innovative work, which incorporates the holistic methods of historical anthropology, explores the surprising ramifications of these long-ago encounters for the present -day political status of native people in California. Lightfoot weaves the results of his own significant archaeological research at Fort Ross, a major Russian mercantile colony, into a cross-cultural comparison, showing how these two colonial ventures--one primarily mercantile and one primarily religious--contributed to the development of new kinds of native identities, social forms, and tribal relationships. His lively account includes personal anecdotes from the field and a provocative discussion of the role played by early ethnographers, such as Alfred Kroeber, in influencing which tribes would eventually receive federal recognition. Indians, Missionaries, and Merchantstakes a fascinating, yet troubling, look at California's past and its role in shaping the state today. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Franciscans|xMissions|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85051539|zCalifornia|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79041717-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 610 27 Franciscans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/530004 650 0 Indians of North America|xFirst contact with other peoples |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85065267 |zCalifornia.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79041717-781 650 0 Indians of North America|xMissions|zCalifornia|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008123241|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Indians of North America|xCommerce|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85065231|zCalifornia|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041717-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Federally recognized Indian tribes|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh95004104|zCalifornia.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79041717-781 650 0 Federal aid to Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85065199|zCalifornia.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79041717-781 650 7 Missions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1023771 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Indians of North America|xFirst contact with other peoples.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/969743 650 7 Indians of North America|xMissions.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/969849 650 7 Indians of North America|xCommerce.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/969687 650 7 Federally recognized Indian tribes.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/922373 650 7 Federal aid to Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/922146 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919741 650 7 Social policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1122738 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1086509 651 0 United States|xPolitics and government.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140410 651 0 United States|xSocial policy.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85140547 651 0 United States|xRace relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85140494 651 7 California.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204928 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|z0520249984|z9780520249981 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=295148|zOnline eBook.
