Although the school began as a refuge for children, it also served as a mechanism for "civilizing" and converting native children to Christianity. As the school's population swelled and financial support dried up, the founders were forced to turn the school over to the state of New York. Under the State Board of Charities, children were subjected to prejudice, poor treatment, and long-term institutionalization, resulting in alienation from their families and cultures. In this harrowing yet essential book, Burich offers new and important insights into the role and nature of boarding schools and their destructive effect on generations of indigenous populations."--Back cover. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 610 20 Thomas Indian School (Iroquois, N.Y.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2005052924 610 27 Thomas Indian School (Iroquois, N.Y.)|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1614533 650 0 Off-reservation boarding schools|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh95000737|zNew York (State)|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126293-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Indian students|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh96008200|zNew York (State)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80126293-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Iroquois Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068260|xEducation|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005758|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Iroquois Indians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068260|xCultural assimilation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005453|zNew York (State)|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126293-781 650 0 Indian children|xAbuse of|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2007007275|zNew York (State)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126293-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Iroquois children|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2003003362|zNew York (State)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80126293-781|xSocial conditions.|0https ://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 650 0 Indians of North America|xEducation|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85065252|zNew York (State) |zCattaraugus Indian Reservation.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh94002623-781 650 0 Indians of North America|xCultural assimilation|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85065239|zNew York (State)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126293- 781 650 7 Off-reservation boarding schools.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1043978 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Indian students.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 969214 650 7 Iroquois Indians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 979404 650 7 Education.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/902499 650 7 Assimilation (Sociology)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/819095 650 7 Indian children|xAbuse of.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/969068 650 7 Iroquois children.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 979433 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Indians of North America|xEducation.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/969714 650 7 Indians of North America|xCultural assimilation.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/969695 651 0 Cattaraugus Indian Reservation (N.Y.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh94002623|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 7 New York (State)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1210280 651 7 New York (State)|zCattaraugus Indian Reservation.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1269152 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBurich, Keith R.|tThomas Indian School and the "irredeemable" children of New York.|bFirst edition.|dSyracuse, New York : Syracuse University Press, [2016]|z9780815634546|w(DLC) 2015048155|w(OCoLC)928488101 830 0 Iroquois and their neighbors.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n90612965 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1158936|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
