Not a conclusion. 520 "This pioneering ethnographic work centers on the dynamics of female authority within the religious life of a conservative Muslim community in the Fergana Valley of Uzbekistan. Peshkova draws upon several years of field research to chronicle the daily lives of women religious leaders, known as otinchalar, and the ways in which they exert a powerful influence in the religious life of the community. In this gender-segregated society, the Muslim women leaders have staked out a vibrant space in which they counsel and assist the women in their specific religious needs. Peshkova finds that otinchalar's religious leadership filters into other areas of society, producing social changes beyond the ritual realm and challenging stereotypical definitions of what it means to be a Muslim woman. Weaving together the stories of individuals' daily lives with her own journey to and from post-Soviet Central Asia, Peshkova provides a rich analysis of identity formation in Uzbekistan. She presents readers with a nuanced portrait of religion and social change that starts with an individual informed but not determined by the sociohistoric context of the region."-- Provided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from e-book title screen (Project Muse platform, viewed November 20, 2014). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Muslim women|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85147398|zUzbekistan|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n91129869-781|xSocial conditions.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 650 0 Women's rights|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85147765|zUzbekistan.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n91129869-781 650 0 Social change|xReligious aspects|xIslam.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2020004033 650 0 Women|xIdentity.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh95001570 650 7 Muslim women.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1030996 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Women's rights.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1178818 650 7 Social change|xReligious aspects|xIslam.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/2018739 650 7 Women|xIdentity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1176807 650 7 Women.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001509 650 7 Womyn.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001516 651 7 Uzbekistan.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1260657 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Electronic books.|2local 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9780815633730|w(DLC) 2014029021 |w(OCoLC)886381752 830 0 Gender and globalization.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/no2007067463 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=802258|zOnline eBook.
