This is historical interdisciplinary analysis at its best, and certainly bound to make us discover or re-think the complex emotional universe that lies underneath a migration movement. A must reading for anyone interested in migration."--Bruno Ramirez, University of Montreal, author of Crossing the 49th Parallel, Migration from Canada to the United States, 1900-1930. 520 "A wise and insightful book. Cancian introduces us to voices that have never been heard before and she allows readers immersed in today's virtual communications to understand how writing on paper, too, could contribute to the achievement of dreams and the resolution of anxieties and longings."--Donna R. Gabaccia, Director, Immigration History Research Center, University of Minnesota, author of Italy's Many Diasporas. 520 Families, Lovers, and their Letters takes us into the passionate hearts and minds of ordinary people caught in the heartbreak of transatlantic migration. It examines the experiences of Italian migrants to Canada and their loved ones left behind in Italy following the Second World War, when the largest migration of Italians to Canada took place. 520 In a micro-analysis of 400 private letters, including three collections that incorporate letters from both sides of the Atlantic, Sonia Cancian provides new evidence on the bidirectional flow of communication during migration. She analyzes how kinship networks functioned as a means of support and control through the flow of news, objects, and persons; how gender roles in productive and reproductive spheres were reinforced as a means of coping with separation; and how the emotional impact of both temporary and permanent separation was expressed during the migration process. Cancian also examines the love letter as a specific form of epistolary exchange, a first in Italian immigrant historiography, revealing the powerful effect that romantic love had on the migration experience. --Book Jacket. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900 - 1999|2fast 650 0 Italians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068860|vCorrespondence.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001488 650 0 Italians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85068860|zCanada|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79007233-781|vCorrespondence.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99001488 650 7 Italians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/980750 650 7 Emigration and immigration.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/908690 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Social aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1354981 651 0 Canada|xEmigration and immigration|xHistory|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100374|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002012476 651 0 Canada|xEmigration and immigration|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2007100373|xSocial aspects.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00002758 651 0 Italy|xEmigration and immigration|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008123061 651 0 Italy|xEmigration and immigration|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008104283|xSocial aspects.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00002758 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204310 651 7 Italy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204565 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Correspondence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 2003288 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Records and correspondence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1423917 655 7 Personal correspondence.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/genreForms/gf2014026141 655 7 Personal correspondence.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1919948 776 08 |iPrint version:|aCancian, Sonia, 1965-|tFamilies, lovers, and their letters.|dWinnipeg [Man.] : University of Manitoba Press, ©2010|z9780887557156|z0887557155 |w(OCoLC)468102726 830 0 Studies in immigration and culture ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2008052107|v4.|x1914-1459 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=497359|zOnline eBook.
