With the rise of the dominance of biological and racialist discourse in the 1880s, the depiction of Jewish characters in Russian literary and cultural productions underwent a significant change, as these cultural practices recast the Jew not only as an archetypal "exotic" and religious or class Other (as in Romanticism and realist writing), but as a biological Other whose acts, deeds, and thoughts were determined by racial differences. This Jew allegedly had physical and psychological characteristics that were genetically determined and that could not be changed by education, acculturation, conversion to Christianity, or change of social status. This stereotype has become a stable archetype that continues to operate in Russian society. 542 1 |fThis work is licensed under a Creative Commons license |uhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 590 JSTOR|bBooks at JSTOR Open Access 650 0 Jews in popular culture|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2005006660|zRussia (Federation)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n92056007-781 650 0 Human body in popular culture.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2003001797 650 0 Body image|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh2009116888|zRussia (Federation)|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n92056007-781 650 0 Russian literature|xHistory and criticism.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008111100 650 7 Jews in popular culture.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1903684 650 7 Human body in popular culture.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1899765 650 7 Body image|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/835349 650 7 Russian literature.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1102312 650 7 Intellectual life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 975769 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 916005 651 0 Russia (Federation)|xIntellectual life.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh95005570 651 0 Russia (Federation)|xEthnic relations.|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/subjects/sh2008110643 651 7 Russia (Federation)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1262050 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 Electronic books.|2gtlm 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMondry, Henrietta.|tExemplary bodies. |dBrighton, Mass. : Academic Studies Press, ©2010|w(DLC) 2009026734 830 0 Borderlines (Boston, Mass.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2009204103 856 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2307/j.ctt21h4wgs |zOnline ebook.
