Not so in Kenya. There, the music of Julius Owino, aka Juliani, blends faith and beats into a potent hip hop gospel aimed at a youth culture hungry for answers spiritual, material, and otherwise. Mwenda Ntarangwi explores the Kenyan hip hop scene through the lens of Juliani's life and career. A born-again Christian, Juliani produces work highlighting the tensions between hip hop's forceful self-expression and a pious approach to public life, even while contesting the basic presumptions of both. In The Street Is My Pulpit, Ntarangwi forges an uncommon collaboration with his subject that offers insights into Juliani's art and goals even as Ntarangwi explores his own religious experience and subjective identity as an ethnographer. What emerges is an original contribution to the scholarship on hip hop's global impact and a passionate study of the music's role in shaping new ways of being Christian in Africa [Publisher description]. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Juliani,|d1984-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ no2016008719 600 07 Juliani,|d1984-|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1992123 648 7 21st century|2fast 650 0 Christian rap (Music)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002007238|zKenya.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n80061011-781 650 0 Christianity|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85025219|zKenya.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061011-781 650 0 Music and youth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh87002010|zKenya.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061011-781 650 0 Youth|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85149310 |zKenya|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80061011- 781|xSocial conditions|y21st century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008643 650 0 Rap musicians|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh90004826|zKenya.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n80061011-781 650 7 Christian rap (Music)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 859488 650 7 Christianity.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/859599 650 7 Music and youth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1030493 650 7 Youth.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1183341 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919811 650 7 Rap musicians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1089960 650 7 Youth.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0001520 651 7 Kenya.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1208718 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Christian rap (Music)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1726558 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNtarangwi, Mwenda.|tStreet is my pulpit. |dUrbana : University of Illinois Press, 2016 |z9780252040061|w(DLC) 2016003055 830 0 Interpretations of culture in the new millennium.|0https:/ /id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2003108731 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1100881|zOnline eBook.
