It demonstrates that during the foundational period for the common law, the question of judgement and judicial ethics was a topic of heated debate - a common problem with multiple different answers. How to be a judge, and how to judge well, was a concern shared by humble and high, keeping both kings and parish priests awake at night. Using theological texts, sermons, legal treatises and letter collections, the book explores how moralists attempted to provide guidance for uncertain judges. It argues that mercy was always the most difficult challenge for a judge, fitting uncomfortably within the law and of disputed value. Shining a new light on English legal history, Justice and mercy reveals the moral dilemmas created by the establishment of the common law. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 To 1500|2fast 648 7 1066-1687|2fast 648 7 1066-1485|2fast 648 7 To 1687|2fast 650 0 Law|zGreat Britain|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85075164|yTo 1500.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012483 650 0 Christian ethics|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85025083|xHistory of doctrines|yMiddle Ages, 600-1500. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00005860 650 0 Justice, Administration of|zGreat Britain|xHistory. 650 0 Mercy.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85083822 650 7 Law.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/993678 650 7 Justice, Administration of.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/985154 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Church history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/860740 650 7 Mercy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1017156 650 7 Law.|2homoit|0https://homosaurus.org/v3/homoit0000702 651 0 Great Britain|xHistory|y1066-1687.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85056742 651 0 Great Britain|xChurch history|y1066-1485.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056612 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204623 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Church history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1411629 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBYRNE, PHILIPPA.|tJUSTICE AND MERCY. |d[Place of publication not identified] : MANCHESTER UNIV PRESS, 2018|z152612534X|w(OCoLC)1028618051 830 0 Artes liberales (Manchester, England)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2017116877 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1914393|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
