This book takes a range of these bodies, from antiquity to the present day, to explore how we seek out echoes, caricatures and replications of ourselves in order to make sense of the complex world in which we live. Packed with case studies, from the commedia del'arte to Hans Bellmer, and the work of Andre Courreges to the 1980s supermodel, this volume explores the divide between the "real" and the constructed. Arguing that the body "other" plays a crucial role in the formation of the self physically and psychologically, leading scholar Adam Geczy contends that the "natural" body has been replaced by a series of imaginary archetypes in our post-modern world, central to which is the figure of the doll. The Artificial Body in Fashion and Art provides a much-needed synthesis of constructed bodies across time and place, drawing on fashion theory, theatre studies and material culture, to explore what the body means in the realms of identity, gender, performance and art. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Human beings in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85062917 650 0 Human body|xSocial aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85015232 650 0 Human body in popular culture.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2003001797 650 0 Dolls|xSymbolic aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2012002069 650 0 Mannequins (Figures)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85080588 650 0 Mannequins (Figures) in art.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2012001613 650 7 Human beings in art.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 962862 650 7 Human body|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/1730101 650 7 Human body in popular culture.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1899765 650 7 Dolls|xSymbolic aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1903044 650 7 Mannequins (Figures)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1007801 650 7 Mannequins (Figures) in art.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1903831 655 4 Electronic books. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGeczy, Adam.|tArtificial body in fashion and art.|dNew York : Bloomsbury Academic, 2016 |z9781472595966|w(DLC) 2016012634|w(OCoLC)932001584 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1286632|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
