In the book, Newson argues that apothecaries had the potential to be innovators in science, especially in the New World where they encountered new environments and diverse healing traditions. However, it shows that despite experimental tendencies among some apothecaries, they generally adhered to traditional humoral practices and imported materia medica from Spain rather than adopt native plants or exploit the region's rich mineral resources. This adherence was not due to state regulation, but reflected the entrenchment of humoral beliefs in popular thought and their promotion by the Church and Inquisition"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 1548-1820|2fast 650 0 Pharmacists|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85100592|zPeru|zLima|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79063382-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Medicine|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85083064|zPeru|zLima|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79063382-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Materia medica|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85082055|zPeru|zLima|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79063382-781|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Pharmacy|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85100609|zPeru|zLima|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79063382-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Science|xSocial aspects|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85118585|zPeru|zLima|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79063382-781|xHistory.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Pharmacists.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1060218 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Medicine.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1014893 650 7 Materia medica.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1011707 650 7 Pharmacy|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1060324 650 7 Science|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1108360 650 7 Relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1892706 651 0 Lima (Peru)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79063382|xSocial conditions.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2001008850 651 0 Lima (Peru)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79063382|xIntellectual life.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005642 651 0 Lima (Peru)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79063382|xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00007590|zSpain.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79006971-781 651 0 Spain|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79006971 |xRelations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00007590|zPeru|zLima.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n79063382-781 651 0 Peru|xHistory|y1548-1820.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85100207 651 7 Peru|zLima.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205423 651 7 Spain.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204303 651 7 Peru.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205190 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aNewson, Linda A.|tMaking medicines in early colonial Lima, Peru.|dLeiden ; Boston : Brill, 2017 |z9789004350632|w(DLC) 2017029635 830 0 Atlantic World Ser. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1613571|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
