The report, "Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future" observed that "the scientific and technological building blocks critical to the United States economic leadership are eroding at a time when many other nations are gathering strength." The report laid out 20 recommendations in four broad areas - K-12 education, science and engineering research, higher education, and economic and technology policy - and warned that a failure to take action could have dire economic consequences. "Rising Above the Gathering Storm" sparked intense discussion among policy makers, industrial leaders, and the general public. Five years after the release of the "Gathering Storm" report, a second report, "Rising Above the Gathering Storm, Revisited: Rapidly Approaching Category 5", assessed changes in America's competitive posture. This report concluded that "our nation's outlook has not improved, but rather has worsened" since the "Gathering Storm" report was released. The report noted examples of other nations that have upgraded their investments in education, technological infrastructure, and innovation systems to a greater extent than has the United States. The ability of the states to drive innovation was the impetus behind a major workshop held in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 20-22, 2011. Titled "Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Developing Regional Innovation Environments," the workshop brought together leaders in education, government, economic development, and industrial innovation to discuss state and regional initiatives to boost competitiveness through science, technology, and innovation. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Technological innovations|zUnited States|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009103068 650 0 Science|xStudy and teaching|xStandards|zUnited States |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2015000823 |vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001533 650 0 Mathematics|xStudy and teaching|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85082157|xStandards|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00007508|zUnited States |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781 |vCongresses.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh99001533 650 7 Technological innovations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1145002 650 7 Science|xStudy and teaching|xStandards.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1108425 650 7 Mathematics|xStudy and teaching|xStandards.|2fast|0https:/ /id.worldcat.org/fast/1012262 650 7 Mathematics|xStudy and teaching.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1012236 650 7 Economic conditions.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919582 650 7 Forecasting.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/931721 651 0 United States|xEconomic conditions|xForecasting|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009100019|vCongresses. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001533 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1423772 655 7 Conference papers and proceedings.|2lcgft|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026068 700 1 Arrison, Thomas S.,|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n92108786|eauthor. 700 1 Olson, Steve,|d1956-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n85025654|eauthor. 710 2 Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy (U.S.)|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82157110 710 2 National Academy of Sciences (U.S.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79056514 710 2 National Academy of Engineering.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79110490 710 2 Institute of Medicine (U.S.)|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79129181 711 2 Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Developing Regional Innovation Environments|d(2011 :|cMadison, Wis.) 776 08 |iPrint version:|tRising above the gathering storm. |dWashington, D.C. : National Academies Press, ©2012 |z9780309256049|w(OCoLC)802346488 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=466309|zOnline eBook.
