The book takes a selection of broad metaphorical categories that the author discovered in his digital research - including animals, coinage, metal, rooms, and writing - and examines particular examples within each category. Pasanek also frames the "dictionary" elements of the project with a more theoretical discussion of what he calls "desultory reading, " a form of "unsystematic perusal" of writing exemplified in the way we approach dictionaries. Pasanek not only argues that 18th-century thinkers largely employed desultory reading, but also that his work on this very project is itself an instance of this approach. The project succeeds twofold: in treating 18th-century writing as its topic and in exemplifying its approach. Pasanek maintains an accompanying website (https:// metaphorized.com) that collects the results of his digital searches. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 18th century|2fast 648 7 1700-1799|2fast 650 0 Metaphor|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85084283|xHistory|y18th century|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006124|vDictionaries.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001671 650 0 English language|vTerms and phrases|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85043743|vDictionaries.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001671 650 7 Metaphor.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1018283 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 English language|xTerms and phrases.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/911873 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Dictionaries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423826 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Dictionaries.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026086 776 08 |iPrint version:|aPasanek, Brad, 1974- author.|tMetaphors of mind|z9781421416885|w(DLC) 2014035088 |w(OCoLC)892212890 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=882656|zOnline eBook.
