This book takes on the task of explaining why violence occurred, what it meant at the time, and what it means today. It examines a policing regime that killed with impunity between 1910 and 1920. Politicians, historians, the media, and historical commissions of the early twentieth century inscribed a celebratory version of events in newspapers, books, lesson plans, museums, and monuments as a practice of nation building. They disavowed the loss and trauma experienced by residents. The architects of official history and memory, however, did not account for the witnesses and survivors of violence who would pass their own memories from one generation to another. They underestimated residents who would stake a claim in the border region, residents who would share their story with the next generation, residents who would leave records that documented the terror that shaped daily life. More than an act of recovery, this book gives insight into people who lived in a world shaped by violence but who refused to be consumed by it.--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Mexicans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85084533|xViolence against|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002424|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov /authorities/names/n80129616-781|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Mexicans|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85084533|xCivil rights|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99004998|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80129616-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 State-sponsored terrorism|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh91004326|zTexas|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /names/n80129616-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Justice|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85071118|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Mexicans.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1019244 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Mexicans|xCivil rights.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1019246 650 7 Justice.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/985122 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xPolitical Freedom & Security|xCivil Rights.|2bisacsh 650 7 State-sponsored terrorism.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/1131965 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xPolitical Freedom & Security|xHuman Rights.|2bisacsh 650 7 Gewalt.|2gnd 650 7 Mexikaner.|2gnd 650 7 HISTORY / United States / State & Local / Southwest (AZ, NM, OK, TX)|2bisacsh 651 0 Mexican-American Border Region|xHistory|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008115845|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh2002012476 651 7 Texas.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210336 651 7 North America|zMexican-American Border Region.|2fast |0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1239966 651 7 Texas.|2gnd 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aMartinez, Monica Munoz, 1984-|tInjustice never leaves you|z9780674976436|w(DLC) 2018002094 |w(OCoLC)1020313014 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1868515|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
