Pamphlets of the time proclaimed that decades earlier a humble laywoman foresaw the nation's calamitous destiny--foreign invasion, widespread misery, and chronic civil strife. The revelations, however, pinpointed the cause of Mexico's struggles: God was punishing the nation for embracing blasphemous secularism. Responses ranged from pious alarm to incredulous scorn. Although most likely a fiction cooked up amid the era's culture wars, Madre Matiana's persona nevertheless endured. In fact, her predictions remained influential well into the twentieth century as society debated the nature of popular culture, the crux of modern nationhood, and the role of women, especially religious women. Here Edward Wright-Rios examines this much-maligned--and sometimes celebrated-- character and her position in the development of a nation. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 00 Matiana,|cMadre|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n2014051862|xProphecies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002011430 600 04 Matiana,|cMadre. 600 07 Matiana,|cMadre.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1934499 610 20 Catholic Church|zMexico|xHistory. 610 24 Catholic Church. 610 27 Catholic Church.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 531720 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1899|2fast 650 0 Women in the Catholic Church|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85147612|zMexico|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81013960-781|xHistory. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005024 650 7 Prophecies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1079193 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Church history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/860740 650 7 Women in the Catholic Church.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1177999 651 0 Mexico|xChurch history|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85084545 651 0 Mexico|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85084571|xProphecies.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002011430 651 7 Mexico.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1211700 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Church history.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1411629 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 Prophecies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1922509 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWright-Rios, Edward N.
