China, however, remained the most populous country still using silver, although the country had no unified national currency; there was not one standard, but many: silver coins circulated alongside chunks of silver and every transaction became an "encounter of wits." This book focuses on how officials, policymakers, bankers, merchants, academics, and journalists in China and around the world answered a simple question: how should China change its monetary system? As different governments in China attempted to create a unified monetary standard in the late 19th and early 20th century, imperial powers--the United States, England, and Japan--tried to shape the direction of Chinese monetary reform for their own benefit. This book argues that the Silver Era in World history ended due to the interaction of imperial competition in East Asia and the state-building projects of different governments in China. When the Nationalist government of China went off the silver standard in 1935, it marked not just a key moment in Chinese history, but in world history"-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 26, 2020). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 0 Money|zChina|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008107921|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012475 650 0 Money|zChina|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008107921|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 0 Monetary policy|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008107905|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Monetary policy|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008107905|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Coinage|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85027788|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781|xHistory|y19th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Coinage|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85027788|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/ n79091151-781|xHistory|y20th century.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Currency question|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008101984|xHistory|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 Currency question|zChina|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008101984|xHistory|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 7 Money.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1025265 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Monetary policy.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1025230 650 7 Coinage.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/866632 650 7 Currency question.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 885329 651 7 China.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206073 655 0 Electronic books. 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aDean, Austin, 1984-|tChina and the end of global silver, 1873-1937.|dIthaca [New York] : Cornell University Press, 2020|z9781501752414|w(DLC) 2020001154 830 0 Cornell studies in money.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2004112165 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2439219|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
