Walker sets out to construct a history of his body and family health in an effort of better understanding his diagnosis with a serious immunological disorder in 2010. While succumbing to pneumonia and a plural effusion in an Intensive Care Unit, a doctor's simple question, 'Do you have a family history of illness?' launched Walker's investigation into his and his family's medical past. The final product represents a startlingly fresh way to view the role of history in understanding our physical selves and, in the broader sense, the communities where we live. In his family's history, Walker discovers something far more valuable than a predisposition to an immunological disorder. He concludes that family stories are what shape us and color our world. Walker's relationship with rural life on a Montana wheat and barley farm are what he continues to rehearse in his own imagination. He discovers that family is at the root of identity and values. Without ties to a family history, we are like wheat waving in the wind. This, he concludes, is the more lasting lesson of history. Walker submits that, at a time when only the present seems to matter, we must renew our interest in the past, or risk misunderstanding our selves and the world around us"--Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Walker, Brett L.,|d1967-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2001057107|xHealth.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00006004 600 10 Walker, Brett L.,|d1967-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2001057107|xFamily.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities /subjects/sh00005743 600 10 Walker, Brett L.,|d1967-|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ names/n2001057107|xHomes and haunts|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005711|zMontana.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80010207-781 650 0 Immunologic diseases|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85064571|xPatients|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00006930|zUnited States|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78095330-781|vBiography. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Genetic disorders|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh87001834|xPatients|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00006930|zUnited States|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n78095330-781|vBiography.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001237 650 0 Families|xPsychological aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2003007664 650 0 History|xPsychological aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85061224 650 0 Memory|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85083497 |xPsychological aspects.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2002011485 650 0 Farm life|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85047218|zMontana.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n80010207-781 650 7 Immunologic diseases.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 967977 650 7 Patients.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1055033 650 7 Genetic disorders|xPatients.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/940017 650 7 Genetic disorders.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 940009 650 7 Families|xPsychological aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1728915 650 7 History|xPsychological aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/958269 650 7 Memory|xPsychological aspects.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1015931 650 7 Memory.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1015913 650 7 Farm life.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/921052 651 0 Montana|vBiography.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008115928 651 7 United States.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204155 651 7 Montana.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1207555 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 Autobiographies.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ genreForms/gf2014026047 655 7 Autobiographies.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1919894 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWalker, Brett L., 1967-|tFamily history of illness.|dSeattle : University of Washington Press, 2017|z9780295743035|w(DLC) 2017028010 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1743757|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
