He travelled to numerous parts of Northern France and Flanders most notably the Ypres Salient to photograph and record graves of fallen soldiers on behalf of grieving relatives. He was one of only three professional photographers assigned to this task, hired by the newly formed Graves Registration Commission in 1915. Through his pencil and lens we gain detailed insight not just into the work he did and the men he worked with, but also aspects of the military zones, the perils of proximity to the Front Line, the devastation of war, and the birth and early work of the Imperial War Graves Commission. Today, the war cemeteries that Ivan saw spring up across battle- scarred landscapes provide the most widespread and enduring reminder of the scale of loss and sacrifice of the Great War."--Publisher's description. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 647 7 World War|d(1914-1918)|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast /1180746 648 7 1914-1918|2fast 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85148236|xPhotography.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh00006943 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|xMonuments|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99002819|zBelgium.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80126041-781 650 0 Cemeteries|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85021756|zBelgium.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n80126041-781 650 0 World War, 1914-1918|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85148236|vPersonal narratives, British.|0https: //id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99001715 650 0 War photographers.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85145196 650 7 Photography.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1061714 650 7 Cemeteries.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/850521 650 7 War photographers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1170547 651 7 Belgium.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1210278 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 Personal narratives|vBritish.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1424087 655 7 Personal narratives.|2lcgft|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/genreForms/gf2014026142 655 7 Personal narratives.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1423843 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGordon-Smith, Jeremy.|tPhotographing the fallen.|dBarnsley, South Yorkshire : Pen & Sword Military, 2017|z1473893658|w(OCoLC)1015827152 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=1690625|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
