Her processes in making the book and an analysis of its scientific content are presented in a historical context. Merian raised insects for five decades, recording the food plants, behavior and ecology of roughly 300 species. Her most influential invention was an "ecological" composition, where the metamorphic cycles of insects (usually moths and butterflies) were arrayed around plants that served as food for the caterpillars. Kay Etheridge analyses the 1679 caterpillar book from the viewpoint of a biologist, arguing that that Merian's study of insect interactions with plants, the first of its kind, was a formative contribution to natural history"-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on November 19, 2020). 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 600 10 Merian, Maria Sibylla,|d1647-1717.|tRaupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumen-Nahrung. 650 0 Caterpillars.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85021000 650 0 Butterflies|xMetamorphosis.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85018382 650 0 Moths|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85087552 |xMetamorphosis.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh00006815 650 0 Biological illustration.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85014174 650 7 Caterpillars.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/849031 650 7 Butterflies|xMetamorphosis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org /fast/843117 650 7 Moths.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1027038 650 7 Metamorphosis.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1018264 650 7 Biological illustration.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/ fast/832253 776 08 |iPrint version:|aEtheridge, Kay.|tFlowering of Ecology : Maria Sibylla Merian's Caterpillar Book.|dBoston : BRILL, ©2020|z9789004284791 830 0 Emergence of natural history ;|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/no2019165688|vvolume 3. 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=2667105|zOnline ebook via EBSCO.
