Summary |
"Music education standards suggest the importance of combining music with outside disciplines. One way of addressing these standards is through the use of interdisciplinary music education. Using two first-grade music classrooms as case study examples, this study set out to determine in what ways interdisciplinary education impacts music instruction and learning inside and outside the music classroom. Four main themes emerged throughout this study. First, all educators observed in this study displayed a strong commitment to interdisciplinary education. Second, interdisciplinary instruction was found to have an impact on the development of life skills. Third, a loss of integrity for the discipline of music was apparent throughout most lessons. Finally, children from both settings also exhibited a wide range of understanding regarding connections being made. In conclusion, I suggest that interdisciplinary music education does not always have positive curricular benefits for music, but does benefit the development of life skills"--P. iii. |
