Goodman travels from contemporary Kabyle Berber communities in Algeria and France to the colonial archives, identifying the products, performances, and media through which Berber identity has developed. In the 1990s, with a major Islamist insurgency underway in Algeria, Berber cultural associations created performance forms that challenged Islamist premises while critiquing their own village practices. Goodman describes the phenomenon of new Kabyle song, a form of world music that transformed village songs for global audiences. She follows new songs as they move from their producers to the copyright agency to the Parisian stage, highlighting the networks of circulation and exchange through which Berbers have achieved global visibility. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 650 0 Berbers|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/ sh85013290|zAlgeria.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names /n79064760-781 650 0 Algerians|zFrance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects /sh2009114676|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh99005024 650 0 Music|xPerformance|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh85088806|zAlgeria.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n79064760-781 650 7 Berbers.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/830652 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 916005 650 7 Algerians.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/804971 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Music|xPerformance.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 1030398 651 0 Algeria|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79064760 |xEthnic relations.|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh00005646 651 7 Algeria.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205459 651 7 France.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1204289 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGoodman, Jane E., 1956-|tBerber culture on the world stage.|dBloomington : Indiana University Press, ©2005|z0253346290|z0253217849|w(DLC) 2005006229 |w(OCoLC)58051138 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=168471|zOnline eBook.
