Jeffrey Lesser analyzes how these newcomers and their descendants adapted to their new country and how national identity was formed as they became Brazilians along with their children and grandchildren. Lesser argues that immigration cannot be divorced from broader patterns of Brazilian race relations, as most immigrants settled in the decades surrounding the final abolition of slavery in 1888 and their experiences were deeply conditioned by ideas of race and ethnicity formed long before their arrival. This broad exploration of the relationships between immigration, ethnicity and nation allows for analysis of one of the most vexing areas of Brazilian study: identity"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription Academic Collection - North America 648 7 19th century|2fast 648 7 20th century|2fast 648 7 1800-1999|2fast 650 0 National characteristics, Brazilian|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85089958|xHistory|y19th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006167 650 0 National characteristics, Brazilian|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh85089958|xHistory|y20th century. |0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002006165 650 0 Immigrants|zBrazil|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008123043|y19th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012475 650 0 Immigrants|zBrazil|xHistory|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh2008123043|y20th century.|0https:// id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002012476 650 7 National characteristics, Brazilian.|2fast|0https:// id.worldcat.org/fast/1033375 650 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/958235 650 7 Immigrants.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/967712 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/ 916005 651 0 Brazil|xEthnic relations|0https://id.loc.gov/authorities/ subjects/sh2008114474|xHistory.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/subjects/sh99005024 651 7 Brazil.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1206830 655 4 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0https://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aLesser, Jeff.|tImmigration, ethnicity, and national identity in Brazil, 1808 to the present |z9780521193627|w(DLC) 2012016727|w(OCoLC)828663372 830 0 New approaches to the Americas.|0https://id.loc.gov/ authorities/names/n97058341 856 40 |uhttps://rider.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http:// search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site& db=nlebk&AN=508892|zOnline eBook via EBSCO.
